Bijay Chhetri becomes the first Indian footballer to sign a permanent contract with a Latin American side

Bijay Chhetri became the first Indian player to join a South American side permanently when he signed a full-time contract with Uruguayan club Colon FC. Colón is based in Montevideo and competes in the Second Division. The 23-year-old centre-back was on loan at the club from Chennaiyin FC last season and made his debut against La Luz in November 2024. He became the second Indian to play in Latin America after Romeo Fernandes, who turned out for Athletico Paranaense on loan in 2015. “Some officials of Colon FC have also been really supportive of my growth since the day I arrived from Chennaiyin FC last year on a loan and subsequently earned a permanent transfer with the club in January. I would like to make a special mention to them,” Chhetri wrote on social media. Chhetri, from Manipur, began his football career with Shillong Lajong in 2016 and made his senior debut with Indian Arrows in 2018. Since then, he has played for clubs such as Chennai City, Real Kashmir, and Sreenidi Deccan before joining Chennaiyin FC this season — his maiden ISL club. At Colon, however, Chhetri played just 25 minutes last season and will look to improve on that this time around.
Kaka keen to reunite with Ancelotti as part of Brazil’s coaching staff

FIFA World Cup 2002 winner Kaka has expressed his interest in joining Carlo Ancelotti as part of his staff for the Brazilian national team. The former attacking midfielder played 92 matches for the Selecao, winning the World Cup once and the FIFA Confederations Cup twice. “If the think-tank of the national team feels I can help in some way, I think that, at this moment, I am ready. I am prepared,” Kaká said in an interview with Caze TV. Kaka played under Ancelotti at AC Milan and Real Madrid, winning five major trophies with the Serie A side, while he won the Ballon d’Or during the same stint, in 2007. “I stopped playing in 2017. Since then, I have wanted to prepare myself. I took sports business courses at Harvard in the United States. I also earned a coaching degree at the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation). I have experience with the national team, the World Cup. If the opportunity comes, I am ready to return to serve the Brazilian national team,” the Brazilian added. Brazil, a five-time world champion, has struggled for world dominance in the last decade, failing to reach beyond the quarterfinals in four of the last five editions of the FIFA World Cup. Ancelotti will take charge of the team from 16th May, with his first two matches lined up against Ecuador (5th June) and Paraguay (10th June). Brazil is fourth in the World Cup qualification standings with four more matches to go. The top six teams qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Ruben Amorim planned to resign in January; Continues after a reassurance from the club’s top brass

According to ESPN, the Red Devils boss was left hugely disillusioned by his start to life at Old Trafford. Manchester United had won just one of their previous eight matches at the time in question. Their most recent result had been a disastrous 3-1 home defeat to bogey club Brighton, and the reflection was worse when Amorim smashed a TV set in the dressing room out of frustration. The local media reported that after the hammering,Amorimquickly became “disenchanted” with how things were working out. The Portuguese tactician even considered stepping down from the job he had taken just two months earlier. But associates managed to “talk him out” of quitting. At the same time, chiefs, including Omar Berrada reassured Amorim that he had the full backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffeand Ineos. United have also told SunSport that although January was a low moment for the club, there was never a discussion about Amorim leaving his post. The gaffer certainly looks set to be backed this summer with several new signings.
Rathi faces ban after a quarrel with Sharma in Monday’s match

Lucknow Super Giants spinner Divesh Rathi has been suspended for the team’s final league-stage match after accumulating more demerit points from a Code of Conduct breach following a tussle with Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Monday. He was also fined 50% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Monday’s high-octane clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The tournament organizers confirmed that Rathi had committed a Level 1 offence for the third time this season, tallying five demerit points that warrant a one-match suspension. “This was his third Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season and hence, he has accumulated two Demerit Points, in addition to three Demerit Points he had accumulated earlier – One Demerit Point against Punjab Kings on 1st April and Two Demerit Points against Mumbai Indians on April 04, 2025. “As he now has Five Demerit Points this season – which result in a one-game suspension – Digvesh will now be suspended for LSG’s next game – against Gujarat Titans on 22nd h May, in Ahmadabad for Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement from IPL read. The incident occurred in the eighth over of SRH’s chase, with Abhishek Sharma in blistering form, having smashed 59 off just 19 deliveries. With the Sunrisers cruising at 99/1, LSG captain Rishabh Pant turned to Rathi for a breakthrough — and the spinner delivered, inducing a catch to extra cover. But what followed marred the moment. As Abhishek walked off, Rathi gave him a fiery send-off, complete with an intense glare. Abhishek, visibly provoked, turned back and walked towards the bowler. The two exchanged words before being separated by the umpire and the LSG fielders. Abhishek, too, was penalized — fined 25% of his match fees for his reaction.
