Assam Football Legend Gilbertson Sangma Passes Away at 71

Gilbertson Sangma, one of Assam’s most celebrated footballers, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 71, marking the end of a legacy that defined an era of the sport in the state. Popularly known as the “Man with the Golden Boot”, Sangma breathed his last at his residence in Guwahati after battling prolonged age-related ailments. He had also been suffering from dementia in recent years. Sangma rose to prominence during the 1970s and 80s, a period when football in India was largely dominated by teams from Bengal and Kerala. Amid that landscape, he emerged as a standout figure from Assam, playing a crucial role in bringing the state into national football conversations. Known for his sharp finishing and attacking instincts, he became a feared forward and a respected name across domestic circuits. His career spanned over 17 years, during which he represented both Assam and Assam Police with distinction. One of his most memorable achievements came in 1981, when he scored the decisive goal for Assam Police against Dempo SC to win the prestigious Bordoloi Trophy. He was also instrumental in Assam’s impressive run in the 1974–75 Santosh Trophy, where his crucial goal against defending champions Kerala helped the team reach the quarterfinals. Sangma’s performances earned him recognition at the national level as well. He went on to represent India in international friendlies in Indonesia and Thailand during the mid-1970s, further cementing his reputation as one of the finest footballers from the region. In recognition of his contribution to the sport, he was awarded the Assam Saurabh in 2022, one of the state’s highest civilian honours.
