“This Is Real Cricket”: Shubman Gill Embraces Test Return Ahead of Afghanistan Challenge

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill is relishing his return to red-ball cricket after a seven-month break, describing Test cricket as the most rewarding format of the game. Fresh from a demanding IPL season, Gill will lead India in the one-off Test against Afghanistan beginning on Saturday. Speaking ahead of the match, the skipper said that nothing compares to the feeling of succeeding in whites. “This is the most fulfilling format for me. The satisfaction you get from performing in Test cricket is different. Wearing the whites and the baggy cap has a charm of its own. This is real cricket,” Gill said. The transition from months of T20 cricket to the rigours of Test cricket will not be easy, particularly with temperatures in Mullanpur expected to touch 40 degrees Celsius. Gill admitted that adapting to the conditions would be a significant challenge. “We have been playing T20 cricket under lights for the last two and a half months. Now we are stepping into extreme heat. It is a mental challenge and requires adjustments in your game,” he said. Leading India is always a special responsibility, but doing so on the ground where he grew up makes the occasion even more memorable for the Punjab batter. “Captaining India is a huge honour. To lead the country on the ground where I spent my formative years makes it even more special,” Gill said. The Indian captain also expressed confidence in the young players in the squad, many of whom he has played alongside in domestic cricket and developmental tours. “I have shared the field with most of these players before. They are extremely talented and I hope they enjoy long and successful careers for India,” he remarked. While India start as favourites, Gill was quick to acknowledge Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket. He pointed to their recent performances on the world stage as proof of their growing stature. “Look at how far Afghanistan have come. With the talent they possess, they are certainly not a weak side. We are up against a very good team and it should be an exciting contest,” he said. Although the match is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, Gill believes it will serve as an important stepping stone for the challenges ahead. “We have nine Test matches before the World Test Championship final. This game gives us a valuable opportunity to prepare ourselves for what lies ahead,” he concluded.
