Mohun Bagan Super Giant registered a convincing 2-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the ISL clash with a composed and dominant display. From the opening minutes, the Mariners dictated the tempo and kept Chennaiyin under sustained pressure.
Robinho looked lively in the attacking third. He dribbled past multiple defenders inside the box but saw his shot blocked at the last moment. The danger was still not over as Anirudh Thapa fired on the rebound, yet Hnamte produced a crucial block to deny the effort.
Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz was kept busy throughout the first half. A deflected strike from Dimitri Petratos was heading goalwards, but Nawaz reacted quickly and got down well to make the save. The visitors struggled to deal with Mohun Bagan’s attacking movement and pressing.
The breakthrough finally came at the perfect time for the Mariners. In first-half stoppage time (45+3’), Jamie Maclaren latched onto a superb through-ball and kept his composure to slot it past Samik Mitra, giving Mohun Bagan a deserved 1-0 lead going into the break.
After halftime, Mohun Bagan continued to control possession and create chances. Chennaiyin tried to respond but lacked sharpness in the final third and failed to convert the few opportunities they managed to build.
The second goal arrived in the 65th minute. Subhasish Bose delivered an excellent cross from the left flank into the box. Dimitri Petratos positioned himself perfectly at the far post and struck a first-time shot that powered into the net despite Samik getting a hand to it.
Mohun Bagan closed down spaces quickly and did not allow Chennaiyin any clear scoring openings. Petratos, now the highest goalscorer in this fixture with three goals, once again played a decisive role as the Mariners comfortably sealed all three points with a 2-0 win.
