Mumbai City Hand Mohun Bagan First Defeat in Yuva Bharati Stadium

Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s early-season momentum hit a significant roadblock on Friday as they slumped to a 1–0 defeat against Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium. It was their first loss of the campaign, and one that could have wider implications, particularly in the race for the top spot, which now looks far less secure.

For a side that had been setting the pace with 13 points from five matches, this was a reality check. Back-to-back slip-ups and a draw against Bengaluru FC, followed by this defeat, suggest that Sergio Lobera’s men are beginning to show signs of inconsistency just as the league starts to take shape.

What will frustrate mariners the most is the nature of the loss. They dominated possession and registered as many as 22 shots, yet lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. In contrast, Mumbai City FC were clinical when it mattered.

The decisive moment came in the 27th minute when a perfectly weighted pass from Jonny Kauko sliced through Mohun Bagan’s defense. Noufal timed his run to perfection and finished with precision, bending his effort into the far corner beyond Vishal Kaith.

Ironically, Kaith was one of Mohun Bagan’s standout performers on the night. His string of crucial saves in the first half prevented the scoreline from becoming far more damaging, underlining the defensive vulnerabilities that continue to trouble Lobera’s side.

Mohun Bagan did have their moments. They pushed hard after the break, won multiple set-pieces, and even found the net through Dimitri Petratos—only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. That moment summed up their night: plenty of effort, but nothing quite going their way.

Tactically too, questions remain. Lobera’s substitutions failed to make the desired impact, and the brief introduction of Deepak Tangri disrupted rather than stabilized the midfield before being corrected later in the game.

As the international break approaches, this defeat raises concerns beyond just the result. The defensive frailties, lack of finishing, and growing inconsistency could prove costly in the long run. More importantly, the grip on the top of the table is loosening, and if these struggles persist, Mohun Bagan may find themselves chasing rather than leading in the weeks ahead.
