10-man Mohun Bagan Super Giants tame East Bengal and cinch Durand Cup

Vishal Kaith was presented the ‘Golden Gloves’ again after he received it in the ISL last season.

Despite the absence of their one key member, Anirudh Thapa being sent off in the 62nd minute, 10-man Mohun Bagan Super Giants clinched the Durand Cup, riding a 71st-minute Petratos left-footed grounder from outside the box to defeat East Bengal.

East Bengal also obtained opportunities in the late second session. But Nandhakumar Sekar, Crespo, must be

regreting squandering a couple of positive chances in the late second session.

The red-and-brigade had passing variation in the middle third, gaining a numerical advantage in the build-up level. But they lacked the precision in the attacking third, especially their foreign footballers who have been roped in at the cost of crores of rupees and who will play the ISL soon lacked the accuracy and deft touches on the top box.

Mohun Bagan coach Juan Ferrando had already revealed that he was not much under pressure as the Durand Cup has been the preparatory tournament for him. It was reflected in the Mariners' game throughout. Petratos's left-footed grounder also did not have that much power. Firstly, Petratos was allowed to move up and cut inside freely. Secondly, despite the slight deflection of Petratos's left footer, the East Bengal custodian could have thwarted it as the ball passed by his hands and entered the nets changing Salt Lake Stadium into jubilation of Mohun Bagan fans.
