According to reports, FIFA is set to introduce a new format after their council meeting regarding the upcoming 2026 World Cup.  It is known that the 2026 World Cup will be played among 48 teams. Qatar World Cup has been played in 32 teams. And increasing the number of teams, 12 groups will be played instead of 8. And there will be four teams in each group. The total number of World Cup matches to a whopping 104 from the previous 64 matches.

According to reports, the top 2 teams from each group, i.e. a total of 24 teams, will go directly to the knockout round. In addition, the eight best third-placed teams from the groups will also join the 24 teams for the knockout rounds. As per FIFA rules, no more than half of the teams will have to play more matches. Instead of 64, the number of matches will increase to 104 in one stroke. Each team will play at least three matches. The duration of the competition can be extended by a maximum of 10 days.

  Since 1998, the World Cup has been held with 32 teams. As such, the 2026 World Cup will be the first time with 48 teams. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly going to be a big deal. This year's World Cup will be jointly organized by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to the FIFA schedule, the 2026 World Cup will begin on May 25. The final will be played on July 19. With so many participating nations as well as three host nations – all in all, the 2026 World Cup is going to be a grand affair.
