She has not forgotten the day when she was forced to live sleepless nights at the dormitory of Salt Lake Stadium even after being allowed to train at the Sports Authority of India Kolkata.
The Khurshi village in Narayangarh sub-division of West Midnapur is waiting for her return to home. Her father Lakshmikant who still does not have own land for farming and toils everyday to manage a paltry amount of earning through the hard work at other's lands, is also waiting for the celebration of daughter's silver medal.
That might be the reason Abha Khatua did not seem jubilant at all while speaking over phone from Patilala. Even after having set the record-throw of 18.6 meters in shot-put and the desired silver medal in the recently concluded Asian Championship in Bangkok, the 26-year-old athlete now is setting her focus on the Asian Games this September.
Even, when asked whether she wants to request the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to send her name to the union sports ministry to include her name in TOP scheme, Abha sounded nonchalant, said, "I do not know. If AFI feels my name should be included in the TOP scheme then only they will send my name. My aim is to maintain the record and earn medal in the Asian Games."
Abha still remembers her days when she had to assist her father in farming every day. She still remembers her everyday walk for also 10 kilometers to reach the bus stand.
She has not forgotten the day when she was forced to live sleepless nights at the dormitory of Salt Lake Stadium even after being allowed to train at the Sports Authority of India Kolkata. She had tried several events since her childhood.
She was trying to settle in heptathlon. "While doing heptathlon in competitions I observed my performance in hot-put was improving. So I decided to switch over to shot-put in the middle of 2018 and the performance in Federation Cup in 2019 was the turning point of my career."
Only after throwing 14.96 meters in Federation Cup Abha was called up in the national preparatory camp in Patalia. The throw helped her to obtain a job at Bombay Customs. Even Abha won her first gold medal in the senior level in South Asian Games in that 2019. She explained, "Whatever improvement I have made, has been due to my training at Patiala under two coaches Parveer Singh and Gursimran Singh."
Abha sounded content with the praises from her national coaches, with the qualification for the Asian Games participation, already earned. Still, after having set national record and silver medal in The Asian Championship, Abha remembered her parents. She uttered, "My father still has to work hard in the cultivation field. I desire to ask him to stop working on the field and take rest. I have plans to say If I get promotion in my office."
