Ad-hoc panel to host trials for Asian Championship

Bajrang and Vinesh started their practice after 15 days.

IOA ad-hoc panel has finalized the dates for Asian Champion (U17 and 23) trails. Star wrestlers Bajrang and Vinesh Phogat started their practice for the Asian Games trial on Monday after 15 days. The wrestlers are involved in a sit-in-protest demanding arrest of the WFI President Brij Bhushan who was alleged of sexual harassment over women wrestlers.

Bajrang and Vinesh have not participated in any competition since January neither they have gone abroad through SAI for training. They have made it clear that their training –cum-exposure is to keep the request. Until recently they were adamant about not undergoing any training or participating in any tournament till their demand is fulfilled. However, Vinesh said that he will start his practice and will participate in tournaments also.

In a one-hour session, Bajrang had Jitender Kinha as his practice partner while Vinesh practiced with his cousin Sangeeta and Rio Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik.

A wrestler, who was in the training session said, "We last did mat training the day before the resumption of the protest. Last 15 days we were very busy meeting support. Discussions were held till the late hours of the night. So practice was not possible."

A team for the UWW Ranking Series event, to be held at Bishken from the 1st to the 4th of June has been selected. It is almost the same team that participated in the Asian Championship at Astana in April and won 14 medals. Bajrang, Vinesh Sakshi, and Sangeeta were not a part of the team as they were protesting.
