Afghanistan's fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has announced his retirement from international cricket. The bowler announced a statement on his Facebook wall about 'one of the toughest’ decisions of his life. It is believed that the once World Cup sensation has taken the decision of retirement after not getting a spot on the international team as well as the upcoming Champions Trophy for the past couple of years.
He notified, "My journey began in the most challenging times of Afghan cricket. I faced difficulties, played under limited resources, and overcame many obstacles, but I never lost faith. The support of cricket fans, my teammates, coaches, and especially my family kept me going through every hardship. I sincerely thank everyone who stood by my side throughout this long journey.".
"The love, prayers, and unwavering support of my family, friends, fans, and the people of Afghanistan have been my greatest strength. I will always be grateful for it," he added.
A key figure in Afghanistan’s rise on the global stage, Shapoor became a cult hero during the 2015 ODI World Cup. He dismissed some of the biggest names in cricket, including Steven Smith, David Warner, Kane Williamson, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Mahmudullah, finishing the tournament with 10 wickets at an average of 26.50.
The 37-year-old left-arm pacer, known for his aggression and pace, debuted in 2009 and took 80 wickets in 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is. His final international match was in 2020 against Ireland in Greater Noida. Inspired by Shoaib Akhtar, he played with the fierce mindset of a fast bowler.
His defining moment came in Dunedin against Scotland, where he helped Afghanistan secure their first-ever ICC tournament win. After taking 4 for 38 to restrict Scotland to 210, he returned as the last man, contributing to an unbeaten 19-run stand. With three balls left, he struck the winning boundary, sealing a historic one-wicket victory.
