After 67 years Salgaocar FC shuts its senior team, not to participate in GPL

The club has confirmed its participation in the under-13 and under-15 Goa league

After 67 years of its foundation in 1956, Salgaocar FC shut down its senior team for the first time. Having already pulled out of the I-League after their last participation in 2015-16, The Goan outfit withdrew its participation in the Goa Premier League this season for the first time.

Rather the club has confirmed its participation in the under-13 and under-15 Goa league. The owner of the team Shivanand Salgaocar could not be contacted.

Shabbir Ali, the former coach of Salgaocar under whose guidance the Goan team spent its golden time by becoming the first Goan team to win the National League (now I-League) in 1999, the Durand Cup and many other r trophies, sounded extremely sad while speaking to Parallel Sports. He said, "It is not only Goa football's loss. Indian football will also be affected by the withdrawal of Salgaocar FC from GPL. I will personally call Shivanand Salgaocar, and try to know about the reason behind such reason."

Incidentally, Salgaocar produced several former Indian international footballers like Brahmanand, Bruno Coutinho, then Alvito D’Cunha, Mahesh Gawali, and Savio Medeira.

The vice-president of the Goa Football Association Jonathan De Sousa is also sad. Speaking from Goa over the phone, he said, "Shivanand Salgaocar wanted his all-age group teams to withdraw from the Goa league. But we on behalf of GFA made an intense request. Then he finally agreed with us, keeping the under-13 and under-15 teams in the Goa League.”
