After controversy India clinch gold in kabaddi beating Iran

During the dying moments of the second half of the match, there was a moment of chaos when Pawan Sehrawat of the Indian team was put out, and Iran scored a point.

India clinched yet another gold at the ongoing Asian Games after its men’s kabaddi team defeated Iran 33-29 in the final in Hangzhou on Saturday. India went into the half-time with the scoreline tilted 17-13 in its favor.

Earlier, the women’s kabaddi team helped India reach the magical figure of 100 medals, after it defeated Chinese Taipei 26-25 in a thrilling final to clinch gold. India, the 2010 and 2014 champion reclaimed the gold medal after a shock defeat against Iran in the 2018 final.

The medal takes India’s tally to 103 - 28 gold, 35 silver and 40 bronze and the nation will stay fourth in the overall medal standings.

The kabaddi final will also be remembered for a significant controversy. During the dying moments of the second half of the match, there was a moment of chaos when Pawan Sehrawat of the Indian team was put out, and Iran scored a point.

However, Pawan protested that he was out of bounds without being touched. This led to a review where India demanded four points, while Iran asked for Pawan's point. The initial decision awarded one point each, leading to Pawan and Bastami of Iran being declared out. However, this decision was soon overturned, causing confusion.

According to the old rule, India would get four points as Pawan had gone out. But Iran protested this, arguing that the new rule would give one point each. The situation escalated into chaos, with the AKFI secretary-general stepping in to check the video. Eventually, he declared that each team would receive one point, as per the new rule. This decision led to a tie between India and Iran with a score of 29-29, adding to the tension and drama of the final match.

India finally crossed over the line against Iran to take the Men's Kabaddi Gold after an hour of halt due to confusion amongst officials. The points went in India’s favor as they beat Iran 33-29.
