After passing the fitness test for men’s matches Lalthansangi says it is amazing

Lalthansangi is India's first female assistant referee to have passed fitness test for men's professional football.

She is Lalthansangi from Mizoram. She hogged the limelight of the Indian football fraternity, especially the fraternity of Indian referees after becoming the first female assistant referee to have passed a fitness test in Madhya Pradesh to earn eligibility to get empanelled for any premier men's football match.

The 25-year-old, in an exclusive telephonic conversation with Parallel Sports on Saturday evening, revealed, "I am still feeling amazing. I cannot believe it. It was held in Madhya Pradesh on 5th November. Along with me nine more women assistant referees, eight women referees, and 40 men assistant referees attended the test. We had to sprint 75 meters within 50 seconds, 25 meters sprint within 20 seconds, and a marathon distance running which was nearly 4000 meters. Trevor Kettle, the All India Football Federation's Chief Referring Officer (CRO) informed me that I had passed the test.”

Lalthansangi hails from a suburb, Bilkhawthlir which is around 120 Kilometres from the state capital, Aizawl. Lalthansangi lost her father in 2018. Her mother is working as a nurse at a local hospital. She also has a brother who is studying.

Lalthansangi was a professional footballer. She has represented Mizoram in the women’s national championship. She even took part regularly in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) last season.

Still, following advice from her mentor, the renowned Mizoram footballer Lalrindika Ralte, Lalthansangi shifted from player to assistant referee. She firmly justified saying, “It was Dika’s advice to start the new innings as an assistant referee. I believe I can earn more as an assistant referee in the national-level women’s and men’s events than I earned as a female footballer. Now my aim is to become a referee with Fifa badge gradually.”

Despite qualifying as the assistant referee in men's football matches, Lalthansangi does not dream of officiating a men's match like I-league and ISL even as the assistant referee. She added, "Unless I become a Fifa referee I should not dream of getting those assignments. So my desire is to conduct women’s international matches also after becoming Fifa referee.”

The Mizoram Football Association secretary Lalnghinglova Hmar also mentioned Lalthansangi’s achievement as a milestone in Mizoram football. He also commented, “Lalthansagi is registered with Mizoram football still as a footballer. But her achievement will inspire other women to think of choosing referring professionally in the near future."

Lalthansangi still practices football, but with the boys to keep her fit and she is preparing for her immediate assignment of senior women’s national football championship qualifiers in Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.
