After Soma and Susmita, a new kid on the block in heptathlon from the cradle of Dronacharya coach

Mohor acquired silver medals in both the heptathlon and high jump in the recently-held Youth National Championship early this month.

Mohor Mukherjee is the new kid on the block in the heptathlon in West Bengal. Significantly, she has been the third heptathlete from the school of Dronacharya awardee coach Kuntal Roy, the only athletic school in Bengal that produced two international heptathletes, Soma Biswas and Susmita Singha Roy.

Mohor is the second athlete from Bengal after Heena Mallick who has ensured a berth in the national squad for the first time in the forthcoming Youth Asian Championship to be held from 27th to 30th April in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 16-year-old girl from Sodpur, North 24 Parganas started heptathlon seriously under the tutelage of Rodrapratim Roy, the son of Dronacharya Kuntal Roy in 2022 along with high jump, after winning the silver in the junior national championship, scoring 4200 points even though she suffered an injury while completing a high-jump event. Even she acquired silver medals in both the heptathlon and high jump in the recently-held Youth National Championship early this month.

Mohor once said about her heptathlon, "Initially it was painful to learn heptathlon. But now I have loved it. Our athletics school has produced two ace heptathletes, former international, Soma Biswas, and Susmita Singha Roy. I have taken pieces of advice from them several times. I have also got inspiration from Swapna Barman, the heptathlete who has gold medals in Asian Games and Asian Championship. I also received encouragement from her."

However, Susmita when asked about Mohor's potential, Susmita said, "She is potential. She also has the hunger to reach the international level. I am optimistic about her future."

Mohor's father Prabir Mukherjee was naturally happy with the news of his daughter's first international. Mukherjee who works as a data-entry operator, said, "Nearly Rs 10 lakh is required a year to maintain Mohor's expenditure. I have already broken many of my Fixed Deposits to bear Mohor's expenditure. Naturally, we are happy and looking forward to her success in the international competitions also."
