Amidst chaotic Mohun Bagan AGM club secretary assures of a fair election

Mohun Bagan is set to hold an Executive Committee (EC) meeting before February 15 to address election-related issues, finalise the date, and establish a board committee.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Mohun Bagan was nothing if not chaotic. The meeting witnessed intense drama as discussions around club elections led to heated arguments and even physical altercations among members.

Speculations of discord had been brewing for days, with the current leadership under Debashis Dutta facing protests from members aligned with Srinjoy Bose. On the day of the AGM, the situation escalated when Srinjoy raised questions regarding the timeline for elections, sparking chaos. Members clashed, and chairs were reportedly thrown before the meeting resumed after a brief disruption.

An unnamed member said, “Srinjoy Bose’s group demanded clarity on elections, and suddenly, chaos erupted. People left their seats, and arguments ensued. However, things calmed down soon.”

However, later on addressing the issue, Debashis Dutta remarked, “I didn’t see anyone throwing chairs at anyone. This is a sports club. We get fired up during matches, and emotions can run high. But members are like brothers.”

On the other hand, Debashis Dutta assured members, “Elections will happen as per legal norms. A committee meeting will be called in February with legal experts to determine the next steps. For those demanding elections immediately, they will also be invited. The right time will come for the elections.”

However, tensions appeared far from resolved. Another member alleged, “It felt like both factions brought hired muscle. Chairs were hurled, and it was unimaginable. Elections didn’t happen in 2022 as the opposition didn’t file nominations, but this time, the Srinjoy Bose faction seems more prepared. This AGM feels like the start of election season.”
