Among his two most cherished gifts in Indian football, Carles Cuadrat says East Bengal’s title was more meritorious

Cuadrat is one of those who had the rare experience of watching legendary Johan Cruyff, and Diego Maradona from close and even playing with them in training.

Carles Cuadrat has not yet joined any club. When contacted through WhatsApp messages he primarily replied he is not giving interviews. Finally, the Spanish coach agreed to reply to the questions on the condition that no question on East Bengal could be placed; he doesn't want to interfere in the teamwork during the season.

Still replying to his feelings about his most cherished gift as a coach he gained in Indian football Carles Cuadrat mentioned, “I will always save in my memory to win two major titles with two different clubs. One is Bengaluru FC’s ISL title in 2019. It was important as for the first time in ISL history a team won both things, regular league (shield starts in season 6th) and playoffs. It has only happened two times in 11 editions (Mumbai City got it also in 2021)

He continued, “The other most treasured gift I have was East Bengal FC’s Super Cup title. I would say it was even more meritorious. Bengaluru FC at that moment won some Cup trophies the seasons before, but the jinx of 12 years of drought without a trophy for East Bengal could be broken. And it was a very important achievement for a big institution with so much history and millions of fans."

"Winning the Kolkata derby twice last season also was very inspiring for the pride and joy of the fans after 5 years of Mohun Bagan’s dominance, but of course, what counts in football are the Titles"

Cuadrat is one of those who had the rare experience of watching legendary Johan Cruyff, and Diego Maradona from close and even playing alongside big stars sometimes during the training sessions at Camp Nou.

While sharing his experience, the 56-year-old coach said, "I remember watching some goals from Cruyff at Camp Nou as a little boy in the stands, also from Maradona later on as a young ball boy over the grass. Big players like all of them had a big impact on the club's development. Barçelona’s culture and success have grown a lot from the 70’s. The key reason was the impact of the legends’ presence like Cruyff, Maradona, and later on Messi.”

But Cuadrat especially expressed gratitude to the late Johan Cruyff saying, “His coming from European champions Ajax to Barcelona inspired a lot of boys and youngsters who were playing for the club during that time. Cruyff’s arrival and work, both changed football history of Barcelona. His teachings created a new way of playing the game. A similar impact was created when Neekens, Maradona, and later Messi played for the team.

Before starting his career as a coach of a club Carles Cuadrat had experience of playing friendly matches for Barcelona under renowned coach Luis Aragones and then he worked under another renowned coach Frank Rijkaard.

When asked about the coaching experience he gained, Carles explained, “Aragones was the coach that let Spain win an international trophy after 44 years (from Euro Cup 1964 to Euro Cup 2008). He was an 'old school' coach who was very pragmatic about the game plan and result. You can learn a lot of things about the basics of coaching from him. I was 18 when I trained under his observation."

“Frank is another top professional, able to win the Europe Champions League as a player and as a coach several times. He came to Barçelona as a coach and ended the dark years of European disappointments with a Trophy in 2006 after 14 years (Cruyff won it for the first time for the club in 1992). Frank had noticeable players' management skills and style of directing the team with coolness which was a good lesson for any coach.”

"After him, Barçelona won again the Champions League in 2009, 2011, and 2015. But Rijkaard was the one who created the foundation of success for the future. He trusted for the first time small talented players like Messi and Iniesta and supported other important ones like Puyol, Ronaldinho, and Xavi. I learned a lot from him working together later in Galatasaray and Arabia National Team.”

Cuadrat however is happy with Rodri’s Ballon d'Or. “He is a top player who operates as the brain of two champion and world-dominant teams; Manchester City and Spanish national team. I think Spanish football is showing its strength year after year, in club and National level competitions, so it was quite strange that we did not have a Ballon d’Or for 64 years (Luis Suarez in 1960). Maybe Iniesta, Xavi, or Casillas deserved it between 2008 and 2012 also.”

"But the momentum of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi did not make it possible at the time. For sure Rodri now is a way to express the great moment of Spanish football professionals just us Aitana Bonmati express it in the female version,” Cuadrat explained.

Pep Guardiola is also a name who has glorified Spanish football as a coach. Carles believes his ability to try new things in strategy and style has taken Guardiola to the next level. Carles explained, “He is a top hard worker coach, putting himself always under pressure and trying new things once the opponent knows their system.”

“He has put full backs playing inside in creation, he has intensified the pressure after losing the ball in attack, he is always trying new tactics to surprise opponents strategies to defense his team patterns.”
