An appeal can be made against Mary Kom's 'constitutional' departure from boxing

Mary Kom's 'constitutional' departure from boxing

Legendary Indian boxer Mary Kom is on the verge of a 'constitutional' goodbye from boxing as she has already been 40 years old. According to the AIBA constitution set in 2013, no boxer will be eligible to take part in any professional competition once he or she crosses 40. The six-time World Champion, the gold medalist in the 2014 Asian Games, and the five-time Asian Champion will be reaching 41 years before the Asian Games next year and she will be 42 in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Mary who last took part in Tokyo Olympics last year suffered from an ACL injury during the trials for Birmingham Commonwealth Games this year in June. She had to undergo an operation and since then Mary has been undergoing a rehabilitation program under the supervision of Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ), the organization that supports her financially.

Mary is also aware of the age barrier. She had admitted in a media conference a couple of months back despite the age barrier she wants to take part in a major international competition finally before saying official goodbye.

But according to her coach Chhotte Lal Yadav, if Mary recovers completely from her injury and regains full fitness by the Asian Games next year then plans are being made to make a formal appeal from the Boxing Federation of India to AIBA to consider Mary's age barrier and allow her to take part in major competitions like Asian Games and Paris Olympics in 2024.

Yadav said, "As her coach, I can also make an appeal to BFI to discuss with AIBA officially regarding the issue. Even I can send a request letter to the AIBA to consider Mary's age barrier issue."
