Asensio, Benzema score in UCL quarterfinal 1st leg to secure win
Chelsea started strongly under new caretaker manager Frank Lampard with Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling coming close to scoring but was saved by Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who was playing against his former club.
The hosts however took the lead when Frenchman Karim Benzema rolled a ball after Vinicius Junior’s shot was deflected by Kepa Arrizabalaga in the 20th minute of the first half. Chelsea were happy to limp into the dressing room with the score line 0-1 as Madrid had eight shots on goal in the opening half.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side looked much more strong in the second half. Chelsea’s job became even harder when Ben Chilwell was given marching order following a rash foul on Rodrygo from behind.
In the one-way match Madrid soon got the second goal when Marco Asensio drove a punch in the net minutes after replacing Rodrygo in the 71st minute.
Ancelotti told in the press meet “ Asensio looks very good and scores almost in every game he plays. Rodrygo takes more risks and moves without the ball Marco is good between the lines and has a great shot.”
