Asian player rule may not be mandatory, salary cap likely to be increased

ISL has also reportedly planned to increase the salary cap from 16.5 crores to 18 crores with two footballers, either domestic or international from each club outside the salary camp.

The Indian Super League (ISL) clubs have been informed about the likely changes in the coaches and player selection guidelines, with Asian Player signing might not be a mandatory requirement, revealed Times of India.

The ISL clubs, even those in the I-League are allowed to sign five foreign footballers, besides one from a member association of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) that includes Australia. A maximum of four of these foreign footballers are allowed to play in a match.

The ISL, according to the Times of India report, is planning to stop implementing the 'Asian quota' rule due to changes in the AFC Club Competition guidelines. The ISL has reportedly intimated to the clubs about the possible changes.

The AFC has allowed teams to register an unlimited number of foreign footballers who can play in the Champions League. So Asian quota is likely to be scraped and several countries will announce changes.

This can bring relief to the ISL clubs as most of the ISL clubs rue they are forced to register players on ‘Asian quota’ who do not offer value for money.

However, the ISL has also reportedly planned to increase the salary cap from 16.5 crores to 18 crores with two footballers, either domestic or international from each club outside the salary camp. Until the last season, only the marquee footballer's salary was outside the cap.
