Assam Football Association to introduce ‘beach soccer’ at Brahmaputra

For the first time, Assam never conceded a goal in their group league matches of the Santosh Trophy qualifiers this season..

Assam Football Association (AFA) is going to introduce ‘beach soccer’ on the bank of river Brahmaputra in Guwahati, the first in the eastern zone.

AFA secretary Sangram Brahma while speaking from Guwahati revealed that 10 teams across the state have so far sent their confirmation for the competition likely to be held in March this year. "We have already conducted state football league with both men and women, youth football league, and also the Futsal league,” divulged Bramha.

He added, “Now we desire to organize the beach soccer league successfully. The Brahmaputra has a great river beach and festivals take place on this beach. So, we expect the beach soccer league will be more gorgeous, even better than the beach soccer league in Goa. The league will be played under the floodlights."

However, before Assam starts their campaign in the final phase of the Santosh Trophy in Arunachal Pradesh on 21st February against Kerala, the team’s coach Subam Rava feels the boys might have to overcome the only psychological pressure that the team never conceded a goal in the qualifying round of the prestigious competition.

“We created history already. For the first time, Assam never conceded a goal in the Santosh Trophy qualifying phase. We played against teams like Himachal Pradesh, Railways, Rajasthan, and Chandigarh. Naturally, now, the boys have the responsibility to maintain the consistency," revealed Assam's first A-licensed coach.

According to Subam they are in the Group of Death in the final phase with Kerala, Services, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Goa. Still, Subam who is associated with NorthEast United FC as one of the reserve coaches sounded optimistic stating, “I believe our young boys can make upset. They need to be smart to deliver the best against the strong teams.”
