BCCI Appoints Devajit Saikia as Caretaker Secretary

Devajit Saikia, a lawyer by profession, is a former first-class cricketer and currently serves as the BCCI joint secretary.

Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the acting secretary after Jay Shah vacated the BCCI secretary chair to join the ICC. Saikia, a former first-class cricketer and current joint secretary, will serve in this role temporarily. BCCI president Roger Binny used his constitutional powers to make the appointment. This ensures a smooth transition until a permanent secretary is named.

In a letter to Devajit Saikia, BCCI president Roger Binny invoked clause 7(1)(d) of the BCCI constitution to delegate secretarial responsibilities to the Assam Advocate General.

“In the event of a vacancy or indisposition, the president shall delegate the functions to another office bearer until the vacancy is filled or the indisposition ends. Therefore, I am delegating the responsibilities of secretary to you until the position is filled as per BCCI rules and regulations. I am confident you will execute these duties with great skill and to the best of your abilities,” Binny wrote.

Devajit Saikia, a lawyer by profession, is a former first-class cricketer and currently serves as the BCCI joint secretary. Hailing from Assam, Saikia studied at Cotton College and represented Assam in the Ranji Trophy as a wicketkeeper-batter, playing four matches. All eyes will be on him as he takes on the role of BCCI acting secretary.

This move follows Jay Shah's elevation as ICC Chairman, officially taking charge on 1st December, replacing Greg Barclay. Saikia will hold the position in a stopgap arrangement, providing continuity in administration until a permanent secretary assumes office.
