Beena Shah wins gold in women’s Lawn Bowls singles in National Games after a decade; eyes Commonwealth Games medal now

This was her third National Games as she had to be content with bronze and silver on the previous occasions. She beat Jharkhand player by 21-7 points on Wednesday.

Beena Shah has broken the jinx of almost 15 years, winning a gold medal in the women's singles in the Lawn Bowls in the ongoing National Games.

The 55-year-old player took time to remember when last Bengal won a gold medal in the women's singles event in Lawn Bowls in a major competition like the National Games. This was her third National Games as she had to be content with bronze and silver on the previous occasions.

She beat Jharkhand player by 21-7 points on Wednesday. In the Under-25 age group category Divyang Sawalka acquired a bronze medal while the Women's Four-team acquired a Silver medal and the Men's Triple-Team acquired a bronze medal in the Games on Wednesday.

Beena has been playing Lawn Bowls for the last 12 years. "My husband used to play the game. While watching him and accompanying him I loved it."

The player is now setting focus on a medal in the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Victoria, Australia from 23rd July to 2nd August 2026. "I participated in international tournaments before. But representing India in the Commonwealth Games will be different," added Beena.

At the same time, Beena expressed regret for the lack of the Lawn Bowl court in Kolkata that is called ‘Bowling Green’. “Only RCGC has the Bowling Green and nearly 150 players practice on the court. If there were at least two or three Lawn Bowl courts then more players would have practiced."

"This game is generally played by the above-25-year-old people and there are plenty of boys, girls, men, and women who are passionate. We only need the infrastructural support," Beena concluded.
