Before his first coaching assignment, Gambhir sets focus on building up a happy dressing room

Gambhir will have the support of his KKR mate Abhishek Nayar who will take on the role of assistant coach of the team and Ryan Ten Doeschate who also joins the support staff.

Gambhir, the new India head coach, had no qualms in admitting that he is taking over an incredibly successful side and has some big shoes to fill as he takes up the new role with the national team.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Indian team's flight to Sri Lanka, Gambhir asserted, “The betterment of Indian cricket is important, Gautam Gambhir is not important”.

Commenting on his immediate focus India's former opening batsman explained, "I have always said that a happy dressing room is a winning dressing room. That will be my responsibility.” 

He added, “For me, I do not complicate too many things. I am taking over a very, very successful team that won the T-20 World Cup and became runner-up in World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup. There are issues to fill, but this is a champions' team.” 

Gambhir also admitted that he has big shoes to fill as he steps into a role previously held by the likes of Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri.
