Bengal victim of unprecedented 'injustice' in Khelo India Women's Football

A footballer even after being shown a 'red card' via 'double yellow cards' is called up again by the referee from outside the ground and allowed to continue playing-Indian football saw such an unprecedented incident in the group-league match against Manipur in the ongoing Khelo India Women's Football in Balaghat Madhya Pradesh.

Bengal camp was simply shocked at the incident. Coach Rajdeep Nandy said, "Referring was so biased that we could not imagine. One of Bengal's key footballers Bandana Roy was shown a red card in the second half. Her crime was just pushing a Manipur forward while clearing the ball. The referees made a desperate attempt to let Bengal down."

Still, the women's team ensured a berth in the semi-final for the first time in their last five participations in the Khelo India Women's football tournament. With a draw and a win along with an unfortunate defeat against Manipur on Monday, Bengal will be meeting Arunachal Pradesh in the crucial last-four stage on Wednesday.

IFA secretary Anirban Dutta however has already asked Bengal team manager Pratim Roy to submit a written complaint to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) regarding the issue. Team manager Pratim Roy however said, "I have informed the Match-Commissioner. He replied showing double-yellow cards and ruling out the footballer was a number mistake made by the referee as the second yellow card was supposed to be shown to another Manipuri footballer. As the tournament is organized by SAI and Union sports ministry then the participating teams are getting confused about submitting complaints."

Incidentally, the Khelo India Games, organized by the Union Sports Ministry and Sports Authority of India (SAI) jointly is offering some ridiculous rules on the game. No physiotherapist, despite assisting the respective participating team is allowed to sit on the reserve bench and enter the field even if any footballer of the respective team gets injured seriously. In that case, a physiotherapist appointed by LOC will go into the field. Then, each participating team will be entitled to register only two goalkeepers. The third goalkeeper can sit on the reserve bench but wearing the jersey of a normal footballer. In that case, she is losing the right to play even if the first two goalkeepers of any team become unavailable.
