Bhaskar Ganguly is not yet impressed with the new AIFF in terms of development

Bhaskar Ganguly, the former Indian skipper, and legendary goalkeeper worked as the ombudsman along with former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi from 2017 to 2020.

It has been six months since the new All India Football Federation (AIFF) under the president Kalyan Chowbe was introduced. Bhaskar Ganguly, the former Indian skipper, and legendary goalkeeper worked as the ombudsman along with former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi from 2017 to 2020. He played a crucial role in guiding the Supreme Court to for Committee of Administrators (COA) and finally the desired election but is not impressed by the new AIFF's activities so far.

Speaking on the issue Ganguly divulged, "First of all, the new committee has spent only six months after sitting at the helm of affairs. Still, I feel the new executive committee should have set its focus on development in the true sense. I submitted a few proposals also to them. But I do not know whether they will implement at all."

Ganguly added, "My proposal was to concentrate on starting youth and grass route development programs in the states and provide financial assistance for them to start the programs. I gave them the idea of providing financial assistance for all the states and ask them to start senior leagues even. Unless you increase the number of quality competitions across the country quality footballers will not be produced."

Citing the example of the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) the Indian captain in the 1982 Asian games, explained, "Even after the introduction of IPL and its success BCCI has not stopped its other domestic competitions while, after ISL was introduced the number of prestigious competitions like Rovers Cup, and DCM have stopped. Durand Cup takes place but the organizers look struggling to get the schedule. These tournaments have been forced to lose their shine. The new executive committee should think over the issue. It is not that they are penniless."

Ganguly who does not feel the federation should not have spent a worthy amount of money for staging the Santosh Trophy semifinal and final in Saudi Arabia, added, "The AIFF should have spent the money which is not at all ignorable, distributing among the state football associations, especially where there is no league and asked them to introduce leagues in the senior level. But still, I will look forward to them. They have passed six months. There is ample time to do some development for Indian football."
