CAS decision on Vinesh Phogat's appeal against disqualification deferred

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in a statement revealed that the ad hoc division of CAS has extended time till 6:00 p.m. on 11th August 2024.

The drama over Vinesh Phogat’s fate remained unfolded although the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) revealed that it would announce the verdict on Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against disqualification from the Olympics final on Saturday night. 

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in a statement revealed that the ad hoc division of CAS has extended time till 6:00 p.m. on 11th August 2024, for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee to issue a decision. The statement also disclosed that the reasoned order would be issued at a later date. 

The Indian grappler was disqualified ahead of the gold medal bout, due to being 100gm overweight than the eligible requirement. 

However, India’s campaign on the 15th day in the Paris Olympics ended with golfer Aditi Ashok and Dioksha Dagar finishing below the top 10. In wrestling, India's Reetika Hooda faced a quarterfinal defeat to Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan in a close bout. While the match ended in a 1-1 tie, Kyzy advanced to the semi-finals as she took the last point. Reetika now awaits the fate of Kyzy in the Games; if the wrestler advances to the final, Reetika will qualify for the repechage round.
