After a three-month break, Mitchell Starc made a strong return to professional cricket. On Friday, he picked up three wickets against Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and used the opportunity to respond firmly to critics who had questioned his fitness and even suggested retirement.
Despite being away from the game for a considerable period, Starc showed no signs of discomfort. Even after conceding a six off his first ball, he bounced back confidently and bowled with authority. The strap on his leg did not seem to hinder him in any way.
Addressing the retirement talk, Starc said, “I’ve heard quite a few things. If people think I’m going to retire just because I’m wearing a strap on my leg, all I can do is laugh it off. I’m nowhere near that stage yet. But I know people like to talk. Life in cricket and life outside it are very different.”
The Australian pacer also expressed relief and joy at being back on the field.
“It feels like I’ve cleared the cobwebs and got back into the rhythm of the game. I’ve been able to run in well after a long time. I’ve enjoyed being out there with my teammates, having fun. I’ve been training hard before this, and it feels great to return this way. I’ve been bowling for a few weeks now, just taking extra care of my elbow to make sure everything stays fine.”
He further added, “I hadn’t bowled to a batter for three months, but today I had good pace. I’ve been working on my strengths and sharpening my skills. I was able to execute what I wanted. Hopefully, I’ll gradually build up to bowling my full quota of 20 overs as well.”
