“We are shocked and devastated”: Ghana footballer killed in armed attack on team bus

Ghanaian football was left reeling after 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong was shot dead when armed robbers attacked a team bus carrying Berekum Chelsea players and staff.

The incident occurred on Sunday night as the team was returning from an away league match against Samartex in Samreboi. According to the club, their bus was ambushed along the Goaso–Bibiani highway by a group of heavily armed men.

Describing the terrifying ordeal, the club said, “A group of armed robbers blocked our path on the return journey. Sensing danger, our driver tried to reverse the bus, but the attackers, masked and carrying assault rifles, opened fire indiscriminately.”

In the chaos that followed, players and support staff ran for safety, taking cover in nearby bushes. “Everyone was trying to save their lives. It was during this moment that Dominic Frimpong was struck by gunfire,” the statement added.

Frimpong was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but could not be saved.

Confirming the tragedy, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed deep grief, stating, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by this incident. This is not just a loss for Berekum Chelsea, but for Ghanaian football. Dominic’s passion and dedication were truly invaluable.”

The association also assured that measures would be taken to improve the safety of teams travelling for domestic competitions.

The attack has once again raised serious concerns over security, especially as a similar incident occurred in 2023 when a bus carrying Legon Cities FC players was targeted by robbers after a match against Samartex. Fortunately, no lives were lost in that instance.

For now, the football community mourns a young life cut short, with grief overshadowing the game and renewed calls for stronger protection for players on the road.
