Yuzvendra Chahal has landed in controversy once again after a video allegedly showing him using an e-cigarette onboard a flight surfaced on social media. The incident comes shortly after Riyan Parag was penalised for a similar act during an IPL match. While the authenticity of the viral clip involving Chahal has not been independently verified, it has already triggered widespread discussion online.
In the video, Chahal is reportedly seen seated by the window inside the aircraft with Punjab Kings teammate Shashank Singh beside him. Attempting to shield his actions with his hand, the spinner appears to inhale from a device before coughing moments later. Smoke-like vapour can also be seen emerging from his mouth. The visuals have raised concerns particularly because e-cigarettes remain banned in India under existing regulations.
This is not the first time Chahal has faced criticism over smoking-related behaviour. Earlier this year, another video showing him smoking while driving had gone viral. The cricketer was also criticised after allegedly throwing the cigarette onto the road before leaving the spot, prompting backlash across social media platforms.
What makes the latest controversy more striking is Chahal’s own recent comments regarding his lifestyle changes. Speaking earlier this season, the senior spinner had revealed that he had quit alcohol nearly six months ago in an effort to improve his fitness and remain competitive. “I want to stay more active and give 150 percent for the team. As a senior player, I want the younger cricketers in the IPL to learn something from me,” he had said.
The debate around player conduct intensified recently after the incident involving Riyan Parag during Rajasthan Royals’ match against Punjab Kings. Cameras focused on the Rajasthan dressing room during the 16th over, where Parag was seen holding a device close to his mouth. Moments later, smoke appeared to emerge from his face area as Yashasvi Jaiswal moved away from the frame, leading to speculation that he too had consumed an e-cigarette.
Smoking is prohibited in dressing rooms and across most parts of cricket stadiums except designated areas. A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India had earlier stressed the risks associated with e-cigarettes, stating that players should avoid such substances entirely due to health and safety concerns. Following the dressing room incident, Parag was fined 25 percent of his match fee.
