Chhangte Reflects on Chhetri’s Influence Ahead of Crucial Kuwait Match

"He deserves to win this, but he can't do it alone. Someone has to step up, and I hope it will be me and my teammates", Chhangte.

Lallianzuala Chhangte’s rise in Indian football began with a memorable brace against Nepal in the 2015 SAFF Championship. A pivotal figure in Chhangte’s journey has been Indian captain Sunil Chhetri. "I have huge respect for Sunil bhai for how he looks after himself, his work ethic, and his humility," Chhangte said.

“When I first joined the camp in 2015, he welcomed me warmly and gave me advice that stayed with me—do your best, enjoy the game, play it simple.” Chhangte emphasized the impact Chhetri has had on his development both on and off the field.

"Being him is not easy. The time I enjoy most with him is when we’re sitting together in the sauna or steam bath, and even in the jacuzzi, because I have a lot of questions to ask him," he shared.

Having shared the pitch with Chhetri for nearly nine years, Chhangte has witnessed Chhetri’s leadership firsthand. As Chhetri approaches retirement, Chhangte is keen to honor him by helping India secure a win against Kuwait in the upcoming World Cup Qualifier on June 6, he concluded, “Winning against Kuwait and advancing to the third round would be the best way to honor Chhetri,”
