He has received applause from the state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for his gold-winning performance in the National School Games.
He has shown the ray of light by winning the only medal (that is gold) for Bengal in the recently concluded National School Games in Gujarat. Animesh Roy, after his success, is now the new kid on the block in Bengal's archery fraternity. He has received applause from the state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for his gold-winning performance.
The 18-year-old Animesh Roy is from a middle-class family in Dhupguri, Jalpaiguri district. His coach, Chandra Sekhar Laguri, who already coached the senior national men's squad in the senior World Cup and Incheon Asian Games in 2014, believes Animesh has the potential to win medals at the senior level.
Animesh joined the State Sports Ministry-run Bengal Archery Academy Jhargram (BAAJ) last year. Laguri said, "Even after winning the gold medal he did not seem content. Speaking over the phone from Nadiad, Gujarat Animesh said, ‘Sir my performance in the 50-meter was not up to the mark.' He has a hunger to learn and rectify. His tenacity is one of his key strengths. Additionally, he always tries to become calm and quiet which is needed in the games like archery."
BAAJ Director Mehebub Mostafa appreciating also the temperament of Animesh revealed, “Animesh was flabby when he joined the academy last year. But now he has reduced his weight and fat through a rigorous fitness training program. He is so tenacious that he never missed the training program."
BAAJ has already produced potential archers like Jewel Sarkar. Laguri says, “Along with Animesh a few more potential archers like Samantha, Anjali Kumari, and Raju Sarkar will be seen bringing glory for the state, even for the country in the future.
