Cristiano Ronaldo reaches remarkable milestone of 900th goal, misses out on the 30-man list of Ballon d'Or first time

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or eight times while Ronaldo won the prestigious award five times.

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his 900th career-goal with a crucial strike in Portugal's 2-1 victory over Croatia in their Nations League opener on Thursday.

Diogo Dalot initially put Portugal ahead in the seventh minute with a well-placed shot after a clever pass from Bruno Fernandes.

Ronaldo, who had been scoreless in Portugal's five Euro 2024 matches, reached his milestone by finishing a precise cross from Nuno Mendes, tapping in from close range to double Portugal's lead in the 34th minute. The CR-7 said after the match, “I dreamed of it.”

Significantly, this has been the first time in the last 21 years Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi have missed out on the Ballon d'Or shortlist. With neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo in the nominees, this is the first time since 2003 that the illustrious duo will be absent from the shortlist.

Even the goal-scoring record for his Saudi club Al Nassr, was not enough for the talisman striker to get included in the 30-man shortlist.

It marks the end of a legendary era that began in 2008 when Cristiano won his first Ballon d'Or and is now nearing its close as the two legends of the game approach the end of their careers.

The winner of the award will be announced on 28th October in Paris.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or eight times while Ronaldo won the prestigious award five times.
