Defending the cup will undoubtedly be challenging says KKR captain

Rahane is confident that his side can rise to the challenge of defending the cup. As he succinctly put it, “Defending the cup will undoubtedly be challenging—that’s why the game is called cricket.”

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane is determined to defend the title by sticking to a “team-first” philosophy. Speaking at the season-opening press conference at Eden Gardens on Thursday, Rahane emphasized the importance of flexibility and clear communication with his teammates.

He stated, “It’s an honour to lead this wonderful franchise. I must play wherever the team needs me, and I’ll communicate accordingly in the coming days.”

Rahane recalled his previous experience with coach Chandrakant Pandit during his time in Mumbai, noting how Pandit’s disciplined approach helped bring out the best in players. “I worked with Chandra Kant Pandit Sir when I was in Mumbai, and I know he is a very disciplined man who can bring out the best in the team. I’ll do my part to keep that spirit alive,” he added.

“I will also strive to maintain a strong understanding with my teammates and give everyone the freedom to play cricket in their own way. But defending the cup will undoubtedly be challenging—that’s why the game is called cricket.”

New mentor Dwayne Bravo, fresh from his successes with the Caribbean Premier League’s Trinbago Knight Riders, is equally committed to maintaining KKR’s winning formula. Bravo explained,  “It’s going to be disrespectful for me not to try and find out some of the good things (Gautam Gambhir) did last season. The core of the team is here, and we were able to reassemble much of the championship squad, even though we lost a few players.”

Bravo continued, emphasising his plan to preserve the energy and vibe that helped the team win last season, “GG has his style, I have my style. I will be leaning a lot on these guys because they had a successful formula. It’s important that we follow that formula, and that energy and vibe are something I am determined to bring here as well.”

Vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer, who became the third most expensive player at a price tag of Rs 23.75 crore, acknowledged the mounting expectations but stressed that performance on the field is what truly matters. Rahane supported Iyer, stating, “Venkatesh Iyer deserves that price. When you’re taking the field for KKR, it’s about delivering regardless of the auction numbers.”

With a blend of seasoned leadership, a continuity of the winning formula, and a strong focus on teamwork, Rahane is confident that his side can rise to the challenge of defending the cup. As he succinctly put it, “Defending the cup will undoubtedly be challenging—that’s why the game is called cricket.”

This unified approach, with Rahane’s steady leadership at the forefront, sets the stage for a competitive IPL 2025 season.
