Sayani Das became the first Asian Swimmer to have crossed the North Channel.
The distance was about 35 km of waterways. The coldest among the seven channels. There were situations when 1 kilometre could be travelled in three hours caused by the strong ocean currents. It took around 13 hours and 22 minutes to swim across the Channel. The all-time barrier will be jellyfish and other marine life.
This coldest fight scripted Sayani Das’s name in history as the first Asian Swimmer to win the North Channel. Previously, in April the Bengal girl won the Cook Strait of New Zealand. North Channel Swimming Association posted on social media congratulating her after this win.
When asked about her latest achievement Sayani’s father stated - “She had to face huge odds to win this Channel. The previous four channels did not face this problem. There were times when she had to float in one place for a long time. Now she is very tired. Jellyfish were causing a lot of trouble. At one point I thought she would give up. However, this victory has come by using the previous experiences.”
