East Bengal struggles, Bangladesh Army bounces back after humiliation in their first match

East Bengal had to play with 10 men after Nishu Kumar was sent off in the 66th minute.

East Bengal’s campaign under new coach Carlos Quadrat stumbled in the team’s opening match this season. Even against the weak Bangladesh Army football team east Bengal failed to earn full points in their opening match of the Durand Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

The spirited Bangladesh Army, trailing by a brace did not give up. They first reduced the margin in the 88th minute through a Mohammed Sahariar volley. Then in the dying minutes (96th minute), Mehraj Pradhan turned out to be the Super-Sub, pushing the ball in a second attempt to force East Bengal to share points with a 2-2 draw.

Mohun Bagan Super Giants drubbed Bangladesh Army 5-0 in the opening match of the tournament.

The Red-and-Gold brigade played with most of the footballers roped in for the ISL this season. They had possession most o the time, statistically 64 percent. The reflection was also seen in the first session as East Bengal took a 2-0 lead riding a spot-kick from Soul Crespo and then an intelligent header from the attacking midfielder Siverio.

But Bangladesh Army seemed changed up and they pressed their fancied opposition after the break. East Bengal had to play with 10 men after Nishu Kumar was sent off in the 66th minute.
