Bhattacharya, a legendary figure in Indian football and former Mohun Bagan stalwart, has seamlessly transitioned from being a player to a mentor. At over 70 years old, his passion for the game remains unshaken as he dedicates his Sundays to nurturing the next generation at the Subrata Bhattacharya Football Academy in Shyamnagar.

Every Sunday morning, he drives 53 kilometres from Golf Green to Shyamnagar, spending hours personally training over 50 U-14 players without charging fees. In fact, Subrata goes a step further, covering the costs of their food and refreshments. "I may not produce star players, but I want to preserve football culture in my hometown," he says about his heartfelt endeavour.

The academy, based on the Sahab Bagan Yubak Brinda ground, also benefits from coaches Shukadev Dhar and Timir Banerjee throughout the week, under Subrata’s guidance. The initiative has already yielded results, with several players joining junior teams of prominent clubs like East Bengal, Bhawanipore, and Adamas.

Despite his age, Subrata handles all aspects of the academy himself, from coaching to financing. For him, the goal is not just creating footballers but ensuring the sport's cultural roots stay alive in his community. His quiet yet impactful efforts are not just building skills but sowing the seeds of hope and inspiration for Bengal’s football future. Subrata Bhattacharya remains a beacon of commitment and a true custodian of Indian football heritage.
