Fighting against fund crunch Moumita brings gold for country
Moumita Ghosh is the new surprise in the field of sports in Bengal. She is a power-lifter who won four gold medals and silver in the recently-held Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in New Zealand.
Moumita who joined the game only a couple of years ago has also bagged medals in the national level championships in both junior and senior age groups, had to overcome a severe financial crisis before going to take part in Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship.
She had to deposit the registration fee of Rs 3.5 initially to take part in the championship and as her father Dipak Ghosh runs a Small businessman, it became almost unbearable for him to accumulate the amount. So he broke his 'Fixed Deposit' and spent it on his daughter.
While talking about the issue Moumita said, “The registration fee was only Rs 3.5 lakh while it cost nearly Rs 4 lakh for the trip in total.” Moumita after returning from New Zealand with medals has very recently received a cheque for Rs 2 lakh from the state sports ministry.
But due to a lack of financial assistance, Moumita is in dilemma about participating in the forthcoming international competitions like Asian Championship this year. Her coaches are Sanglap Naha and Prabir Ghosh. Ghosh, however, expressed a little bit of relief saying, "The job opportunity in the government sector is resuming after a long time. That is the only point to get relief and that is why young boys and girls in numbers are gradually joining powerlifting.”
