It was announced in November 2020, that Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia.

An iconic figure and one of the greatest strikers in English history, Bobby Charlton passed away on Saturday at the age of 86.

He was one of the survivors of the tragic plane crash in Munich that destroyed a European Cup semifinalist Manchester United team destined for greatness. Charlton then picked himself up and went on to play a crucial role in the club's revival, as well as England's World Cup victory in 1966.

A statement from Charlton’s family, released by United, announced that he died on Saturday surrounded by his family. Charlton’s death meant that Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat trick in England's World Cup winning match, is the only surviving member of that England squad. And also that Dennis Law is the last surviving member of the trinity at Manchester United. Charlton was a part of the popular "Trinity" alongside George Best and Denis Law. This trio had a pivotal role in guiding United to victory in the 1968 European Cup.

This legendary and gifted midfielder with a ferocious shot, Charlton was the leading scorer for both Manchester United with 249 goals and England with 49 goals for more than four decades until being eclipsed by Wayne Rooney.

The Prince of Wales, William said that Sir Bobby Charlton was, “a true great who will be remembered forever” in a personal message on social media. The official X account of Manchester United mentioned, “Sir Bobby Charlton CBE, 1937-2023. Words will never be enough."

“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game,” United further said.

Charlton was known for his humility, discipline and sportsmanship. He was never removed for his appearances for United from 1956-73 or for a number of internationals for England from 1958-70. Following his retirement, Charlton served as a director for United for 39 years. Alex Ferguson, who managed United from 1986-2013, said, "Bobby Charlton is absolutely without peer in the history of the English game.”
