Football in Kashmir is in a process of rebirth, set to take off following the initiative of a new body

women's team will participate in the forthcoming senior national football championship, commencing on the 27th March in Chhattisgarh.

Football in Kashmir is in a process of rejuvenation. After two decades, following Jammu & Kashmir High Court's directives, 16 districts out of 20 under the authority of the J&K Football Association underwent an election and a new body has been built up.

Wasim Aslam has been elected as the chairman of the new body while Bashir Ahmed Shah has been elected as the general secretary. Wasim Aslam while speaking from Srinagar recently, said, "After two decades, the election in J&K Football Association took place through straight ballots. There were three persons in the state football association, Zamir Thakur, Fayaz Sofi, and Amin Malik. These three who were all linked with banned terrorist organizations and freed on parole were at the helm of affairs in the J&K football for the last 20 years and had just destroyed the football. We have submitted written complaints against them to several authorities including the All India Football Federation (AIFF), J&K Government, and even Anti-Corruption Bureau, mentioning crores of financial scams, and requesting the bodies to start the interrogation. But nothing has been initiated so far."

The new chairman however claimed, "For the first time we organized an All India Women's Football competition where a team from Kerala Police came and participated. Eight women's teams took part in the competition and all the matches were staged in the 'typically disturbed' areas of Srinagar. We are sending the women's team to participate in the forthcoming senior women's national football championship, commencing on the 27th of this month in Chhattisgarh. That is why our selection method was going on through this competition where J&K Bank Police football had taken part also."

Significantly the chairman also revealed, "In our new committee we have included all our former footballers, coaches, and referee who were thrown out of the state by the former football association people. We have included Isfaq Ahmed, Mehrajuddin Wadoo, our only A-licensed coach Hilal Rasool Parray who is now busy with the new team from the valley, Downtown FC's preparation for the second division I-League, Sajid Yousuf Dar, Nazir Ahmed Andrabi in our new body. We have plans to invite them and request them to contribute to the rejuvenated football in the valley."
