A night to forget for Portugal as the former Euro Cup champions bowed out of the competition losing to France in the penalty shoot-out following a nail-biting encounter on Friday midnight (Indian time). 

Cristiano Ronaldo also said goodbye to the Euro Cup, inscribing his glorious prominence through the last two decades in one of the most prestigious competitions. 

But this European Championship should not be one of his sweetest memories as for the first time in his entire career - he took part in the first at Euro 2004 - he did not score any goals in the final stages of major tournaments.

The legendary Portugal striker whose 130 international goals for the country are still a standing record started all five of Portugal's games in the tournament (Czechia, Turkey, Georgia, Slovenia, and France), but failed to score in a single match. 

There was only one assist from the CR-7 for Bruno Fernandes in the game against Turkey, in Dortmund.

However, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez was noncommittal when asked about Cristiano Ronaldo's future with the national team following a Euro 2024 quarterfinal loss against France on Friday.

“It is too soon and raw after the match to talk about that and there have been no individual decisions made,” Martínez said according to ESPN.

The 39-year-old confirmed that 2024 would be his last Euro appearance after previously winning the tournament in 2016.

“Without a doubt, it is the last Euro [for me], of course it is,” Ronaldo told ESPN. 

His next major opportunity to suit up for the national team will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup when Ronaldo will be 41 years old.
