In recent years, series of scams of more than a few crore in Jammu & Kashmir almost paralyzed football in J&K.
Football in Jammu & Kashmir is gradually coming out of the scams and scandals. Under the leadership of Wasim Aslam, the chairman of J &K Football Association, the football fraternity in Jammu & Kashmir that included all the former international footballers like Isfaq Ahmed and Mehrajuddin Wadoo as well as the coaches like Hilal is all set to revive football development and build up a football-playing state.
In recent years, series of scams of more than a few crore in Jammu & Kashmir almost paralyzed football in J&K. The scandals, namely the Biryani scam, Khelo India scam, Baby League scam, Mufti Memorial scam, and now, the Covid-19 fund scam stopped the development of the game in J&K.
According to Wasim Aslam who has been looking at overall football affairs for the last year, the Jammu & Kashmir government finally has barred the key men from participating in the upcoming J&K Football Association election.
Speaking to Parallel Sports, Wasim Aslam said, "Now we are waiting for the election date which will be fixed by the J&K Sports Council. Along with us, a major section of former international footballers from Kashmir also appealed through a media conference held on Sunday to the J&K Sports Council to fix the election date and properly run football in the future. Jammu & Kashmir government (sports ministry) has already banned the four key alleged men namely, Zameer Ahmed Thakur (former president), S.S. Bunty (former treasurer), S.A Hameed (former chief executive), and Fayaz Ahmed Sofi (former district president, Jammu) from contesting in the election."
Wasim Aslam is reportedly going to contest the president's post in the election. Commenting on the issue he explained, "Investigations on the scam are still going on. However, some of the scandals like Rs 63 lakhs in the Khelo India football tournament, Rs 37 lakh fraud in the Baby League, and embezzlement in the Covid-19 relief fund have not yet been concluded. Still, after taking over charge of the J&K Football Association we organized an under-17 youth league in Kishtwar which was won by Sudeva FC. Srinagar Premier League is going on."
Wasim asserted, "If I am chosen the president my key agenda will be to create job opportunities in the government sector as well as to introduce a knock-out tournament where I will try to invite teams like East Bengal and Mohun Bagan also and also I will try to engage as many former footballers and coaches possible in the Jammu &Kashmir Football Association administration."
Representatives from various districts, including Bandipora, Baramullah, Sopore, Pattan, Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Anantnag, Shopian, and others, were present at the meeting and media conference held on Sunday.
