Former India international and one of the country's all-time great midfielders Gautam Sarkar has joined Veteran Sports Club's nursery team as an 'adviser'.

Veteran Sports Club's nursery team already had an impressive show in the IFA-organized nursery football league as the boys reached the quarter-final stage of the main draw after being the champion in their group.

The club secretary, former India international goalkeeper Sumit Mukherjee whose initiative helped the club to have Gautam Sarkar as the adviser said, "We have presently around 45 boys in the nursery team. I feel the boys will be greatly inspired by the presence of such a legendary footballer."

Sarkar also encouraged the boys in his brief pep-talk at the club on Sunday on the occasion of ‘Bar Puja’. The country’s first female Arjun awardee footballer Shanti Mallick, international referee and match-assessor Anamika Saha, and former footballer Pradip Talukdar were also present at the function along with Gautam Sarkar.

Sarkar who is the Technical Director (TD) of Customs Football Club will reportedly be present once or twice a week in the training of Veteran Sports Club’s nursery boys.

According to Mukherjee plans are also there to field the team in the AIFF-organised grass-route and youth leagues in the upcoming season. The potential boys can also be sent to the top clubs' youth teams if Veteran Sports Club gets such an offer in the future.
