Gavaskar urges India to focus on the England game, "Don’t think too far ahead," he says

He believes England’s problem in this World Cup is that they haven’t got off to good starts with both bat and ball

World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar urged the Indian team to focus only on the game against the defending champions England in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and asked them to not worry about the future. India will take on England at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow in just a few hours.

In an interview with India Today Gavaskar said, “You just want to win. India should just focus on the next match and that’s all. Don’t think too far ahead. If chasing is the way you want to win, then keep doing that. Don’t worry about the knockout stage as of yet. Just think about the England team. Don’t think about the future. The future will take care of itself.”

England have had a bleak campaign so far in the World Cup 2023 as they have lost four and won just one match and currently occupies the 10th position in the points table. Their hopes of reaching the semi-finals are hanging by a thin thread.

Gavaskar said, “The opening, England hasn’t got off to a start. If you look at all the teams that are struggling in this World Cup, none of them have got off to a good start. They've lost a couple of wickets in the first 10 overs. They haven't got a platform for their other batters to come in and blast away in the middle overs. England's problem has been that they haven't got off to a good start with the bat or with the ball.”

A win for India against England will help them take one step closer to cementing a semi-final berth alongside reclaiming the top position in the points table. Meanwhile, the defending champions will be hoping to win all the matches for the rest of the tournament in order to make it to the semi-finals.
