Chappel has revealed always that both Roberts and Lillee are the greatest fast bowlers he faced.
Before the forthcoming third Test in Gabba, Brisbane from 14th December Australia’s former captain and legendary batsman Greg Chappell has poured huge praises for Jasprit Bumrah. Chappel who was the coach of India’s senior squad claimed Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling is the blending of Dennis Lillee and Andy Roberts!
Chappel has revealed always that both Roberts and Lillee are the greatest fast bowlers he faced.
Chappell went on to explain that pacers are the architects of chaos. And in modern cricket, he only loves and admires India Cricket Team speedster Jasprit Bumrah. The Aussie great also shared great admiration for South African speedster Kagiso Rabada.
“Lillee was a warrior, combining raw aggression with psychological prowess. His ability to make it hard for batsmen to score runs with his probing line and length, allied to his guile and determination, made him the champion that he was,” Greg Chappel wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Chappel claimed that though Bumrah is not overaggressive, his unique ability to ace every yorker with the release point and trajectory makes him lethal and precise, just like Lille.
“Bumrah, though less overtly combative, channels Lillee’s ability to unsettle batsmen. His deadly yorkers and disconcerting bounce – especially with his unorthodox release point and trajectory – echo Lillee’s capacity to dictate terms. Bumrah’s quiet intensity and precision make him a nightmare, much like Lillee’s unrelenting aggression,” he added.
“Andy Roberts, the original mastermind of the West Indies’ fast-bowling quartet, combined pace with strategic brilliance. His ability to set batsmen up – switching from brutal short balls to devastating yorkers – earned him 202 wickets at an average of 25.61,” Chappell wrote.

“Bumrah shares Roberts’ cerebral approach. Both bowlers use subtle variations to outfox batsmen, relying on strategy rather than brute force. Bumrah’s spell in the 2018 Boxing Day Test against Australia – culminating in 6-33 – was a modern echo of Roberts’ game-changing bursts,” Chappell concluded.
