Guardiola attacks Bernabeu turf after 3-3 thriller

Failing to win there again, the City boss admitted that overcoming Madrid at home is "not impossible" but "very difficult".

Pep Guardiola strongly criticized Bernabeu Stadium and its turf after his Manchester City team drew a 3-3 thriller there in a Champions League quarterfinal first leg on Tuesday.

Madrid was granted special permission by UEFA to close the roof of its recently renovated ground.

When asked about this post-match, Guardiola said: "I like to see the sky, but the truth is that the stadium is impressive. Now they just have to take care of the grass."

"Do not take it the wrong way. It is an impressive piece of work. When I was playing, the Bernabeu grass was a carpet, a carpet, but hey, I guess they will fix it," the Catalan added.

Guardiola had also praised the Bernabeu but made similar remarks by saying, "Now they only have to improve the grass" and that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez "only has to worry about making a good pitch."

As for the action itself, Guardiola admitted that it was a "good" match and imagined that people "had a good time" watching it.

"Both teams wanted to attack. You spend the day worrying about how to stop Real Madrid's transitions, but it's impossible.

"We already know that in this ground, the game is never over with Madrid. We had the quality to score two great goals," Guardiola added, in a nod to wonder strikes from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol which at one point put his men 3-2 up.

Shedding light on his half-time team talk which clearly worked wonders, Guardiola revealed how "I told them there were 45 and 90 minutes left, and we talked about the game".

Failing to win there again, the City boss admitted that overcoming Madrid at home is "not impossible" but "very difficult".

Fodden, Gvardiol and Bernado Silva scored for City while Ruben Dias, Rodrigo and Valverde scored for Real Madrid.
