Gujarat Super League TT likely in August; Ankur says the format is challenging

Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA) is expecting Kamal and Sathiyan will be available now as the competition is going to happen after the Paris Olympics.

The franchise-based Gujarat Super League (GSL) table tennis this season has been postponed and is likely to be held in August. The League was scheduled to be held in June's second week.

But due to the country's top paddlers' international engagements including the Paris Olympics, the GSL is likely to be held in August after the Olympics.

The table tennis in the Paris Olympics is scheduled to be over on 9th August.

GSL will see the addition of three teams this season. Last year, in its inaugural season GSL happened with five teams.

The franchises were Bhayani Star, Kataria Kings, Multimet Marvels, Shamal Squad, Topnotch Achievers and Tapti Tigers. The Gujarat Table Tennis Association secretary Kushal Sangtania revealed out of the eight, six franchises of the inaugural season are continuing this season also.

“The purpose behind organizing the League is an exposure of promising paddlers from Gujarat. It will be Gujarat versus India. The design has been made in that way the seven players of each participating eight teams will be a mixture of national and Gujarat paddlers,” revealed Kushal.

He continued, “All the paddlers will play each other in a decider of ‘one game’. Each team will have one national male and female paddler and Gujarat paddlers, even if their rank is low, will have the opportunity to play against the country’s best paddlers.”

Following the rule of IPL, GSL will also witness an auction 45 days before the League.

According to Kushal, out of the total 42 participating paddlers, the country’s most of the top paddlers except Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan have given official consent to participation in the GSL this season.

Gujarat State Table Tennis Association (GSTTA) is expecting Kamal and Sathiyan will be available now as the competition is going to happen after the Paris Olympics.

The total prize money of the League will be nearly Rs 6 lakh this season as the base price for a national-ranked paddler has been set at Rs 50,000.

Among the 10 probable paddlers to take part in GSL season-2 Ankur Bhattacharjee is going to be one of the major attractions in the League this season.

The country’s number one ranked paddler who will participate in the League for the first time commented, "The best of one-game format is challenging and interesting also for us. We will not get time to settle down. We need to be stronger in technique and temperament before going to board. So it will ultimately help to improve our standard.”

Ankur who was supposed to tour Prague to take part in the premier league in Czech Republic this month, is not being able to go due to his national engagements. He is now preparing for the forthcoming South Asian Table Tennis Championship.
