Gundogan selected as the leader from a five-man core group of Man City.

Ilkay Gundogan has been selected to lead the team after voting from within a group of five players from Man City. The inclusion of Scott in the group raised a few eyebrows.

Following the departure of the club captain Fernandinho last summer, City’s players voted as to whom they wanted in their leadership. Ilkay Gundogan was voted as captain from a group of five senior players such as Ruben Dias, Kyle Walker, Rodri, and Scott Carson. The inclusion of Scott Carson in the group raised a few eyebrows.
Many might have forgotten that the former England custodian is in the Man City team. Scott Carson, presently 37 years, has made two appearances during the last four years at the Etihad Stadium. His last Premier League outing was two years ago against Newcastle which City dramatically won 4-3. The match was played when City was already confirmed as the champion.
Although many are surprised by the inclusion of Carson, Guardiola has regularly hailed the veteran player’s influence at the club in the past.
Speaking about the vote the German midfielder said, “I am happy and proud as my teammates have selected me as captain. I would have been just as happy if Kevin would have been selected in my place.” He added that the team now has five captains who will lead the side in a lot of things. He is happy to have four members by his side to help him.
