Gurmeet Singh Chahal is the third-best goalkeeper considering the saves in the ISL this season, making 67 saves in 23 matches. The NorthEast United FC goalkeeper has also placed him within the top five goalkeepers in the ISL, keeping seven clean sheets.
Naushad Moosa, the assistant coach of NorthEast United FC also heaped high praise on Gurmeet commenting, “He has got the hunger to improve every day. He is disciplined and hard-working.”
The 25-year-old custodian from Narwana, Haryana still remembers the match against Bengaluru FC in 2020. Conceding a goal by his own mistake changed Gurmeet's career.
"I made a mistake and conceded the goal. But it haunted me for long. I promised myself that I must have to take my performance to the next level from that day and doubled the amount of hard-work. I did not have to look back then," remembered Gurmeet.
The goalkeeper started playing hockey in his childhood before getting interested on football at his school St. Mary’s. Then he was selected in the district team. He used to play as a forward there. But due to his height (6 fit 1 inch) teammates and coach asked him to start as a goalkeeper.
Gurmit was initially a self-made goalkeeper when learning basics of the goalkeeping at a Panipat academy. “I used to watch Manuel Neuer’s video a lot. I still watch his videos and try to follow his style,” added the custodian.
He clarified, “I have learned so many things on goalkeeping from the goalkeeper coaches of the teams I played for. But I can mention Joseph Sidy’s name who had a lot of contributions to the improvement of my performance in NorthEast United FC.”
Despite establishing him as a promising goalkeeper Gurmeet's journey was not easy. He had to sit on the bench as the third goalkeeper of NorthEast United FC in 2018. Rehenesh TP was the team's goalkeeper at that time Gurmeet remembers Rehenesh's encouragement still today.
“Rehenesh encouraged me a lot saying that being a junior goalkeeper I have to become patient and continue hard-working and if I can continue then I would be regular in the first eleven one day. His encouragement gave me a lot,” Gurmeet explained.
The 2019 season was also a nightmare for the goalkeeper when he was ruled out of the pitch for whole season due to a knee injury. He revealed, "I motivated myself, and read motivational books to keep me positive about the comeback."
Gurmeet had represented the Under-23 Indian team in the last Asian Games. Now, after being called up among the senior Indian probables Gurmeet has started taking mental preparation. “I have a desire to become a regular member of the senior Indian squad like Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, ” concluded Gurmeet.
