The last international match (One-Day International) took place at Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior, in 2010, and that was also significant as Sachin Tendulkar smashed the first ODI double hundred.
After a 14-year gap, Gwalior is going to have a new cricket stadium built on the city's outskirts. The newly built Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium will make its international debut today, on Sunday, when the first T-20 International match between India and Bangladesh will be staged.
The last international match (One-Day International) took place at Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior, in 2010, and that was also significant as Sachin Tendulkar smashed the first ODI double hundred.
Prashant Mehta, president of the Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) revealed while speaking to Indian Express, that only the first phase of the stadium has been completed now and the second phase is likely to start soon after GDCA receives the fund of Rs 110 crores from BCCI.
The current capacity of the stadium is 30,000 and once phase 2 is completed it will have a total capacity of 55,000.
It took seven years to complete this stadium. The stadium is equipped with all the modern facilities. According to the GDCA president, only the drainage system outside the stadium has to be improved. A sudden torrential flooded the outside of the stadium only two weeks ago.
This will be the second stadium to be owned by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA). The Holkar Stadium located in the heart of Indore has hosted three Test matches and Mehta is confident that in a few year's time, Gwalior will host a Test match.
