Hundred javelin-throwers to fight for a medal on the second 'Javelin Day' in Bengal

It is learned Heena will be included in India’s 100-meter relay team for the Asian Games.

The 7th of August 2023 is going to be the second 'Javelin Day'. It is an AFI directive to all its state-affiliated units to celebrate Neeraj Chopra’s precious gold, won in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 on 7th August.

West Bengal Athletics Association will also celebrate the day at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) ground with nearly 100 javelin throwers from all around the districts expected to take part. The champion and runner-up will also be given medals.

However, WBAA is going to organize the 71st state athletics championship from the 13th to the 16th of August at the SAI complex and the Salt Lake Stadium.

The WBAA however is still in little doubt over the availability of the stadium due to the ongoing Durand Cup and the forthcoming AFC Cup match.

Even if, the stadium is finally available then only long distance-running is likely to take place at the stadium.

WBAA has decided to introduce the under-23 age group in the state meet along with all other scheduled age group competitions. More than 1200 participants are likely to fight for medals in the state meet where prominent athletes who have already left Bengal like Swapna Barman (Madhya Pradesh), and Abha Khatua (Maharashtra) will not be seen in action. WBAA secretary Kamal Mitra said, “Even Rezwana Heena Mallick will not be able to take part as she is presently in the national preparatory camp in Patiala."

It is learned Heena will be included in India’s 100-meter relay team for the Asian Games.
